About Public
Toilets In New York
By
Rudi Tautz
For more years than we can count, if a visitor asked a New Yorker
about the where-abouts of a public toilet, the answer would have
been, "There aren't any!" There have been many efforts to remedy the
situation but, until recently, nothing had been successful in
bringing public toilets to the city what has everything...except...
Now we have seen a breakthrough (no pun intended). Cemusa, Inc., an
advertising firm headquartered in Spain, has signed a contract with
the City of New York to install a public toilet facility in Madison
Square Park. We have heard that these ultra-modern toilets will be
wheelchair accessible and self-cleaning. The facility will be at
Madison Square Park (which is at West 25th Street and 5th Avenue).
We have been unable to get a date of when the facility will be
operational but rumor has it that it will be in operation before
Christmas (this Christmas, folks!). We also could not find out if
there will be attendants at the facility but our guess is that there
will be.
As we frequently suggest, check with the the
Times Square Visitors Center in the landmark Embassy Movie Theatre on Broadway
(between 46th and 47th Streets) for more information. The Visitors Center offers city-wide visitor information between
the hours of 8a and 8p, 7 days a week. Operated by the Times Square Business Improvement District, tourist advisors,
fluent in many languages, are there to assist you and help make your visit to
the Big Apple more enjoyable. We hope you enjoy your visits as much as we
have ours!
